Microbia project to recycle waste oil and diesel awarded £209k

The Plastics Hub is pleased to share the news that two of its lead academics, Prof John Ward (UCL Biochemical Engineering) and Prof Helen Hailes (UCL Chemistry), have won a £209k grant for 12 months from the Defence and Security Accelerator for a project entitled: ‘New microbial consortia for breaking down Ministry of Defence (MOD) oil and diesel waste materials into useful end products’.

The project will develop and manipulate bacterial consortia to deal with the large amounts of waste fuel, oils, lubricants, and other liquid chemicals produced by the MOD. The microbial consortia will be developed to convert the waste oils into reusable by-products such as the bioplastic PHA.
