Co-designing solutions to the plastic-waste problem

Earlier in March, UCL Plastic Waste Innovation Hub organised a community-building workshop, in partnership with BEAMS Research Coordination Office, with the aim of identifying new opportunities for collaboration with industry and other stakeholders.

The workshop brought together a variety of professionals from across the plastics sector, including academics, manufacturers, retailers, policy makers, local government, sustainability charities, and waste management; and discussions were wide-ranging. In particular, we organised five breakout discussion sessions in the afternoon, in which delegates were invited to exchange views and opinion on the following key themes: Biochemical and chemical recycling; design interventions; systems design; biodegradable plastics; and circular economy analysis.

Several opportunities for future research and collaboration have arisen from the workshop and ensuing discussions, all of which are outlined in our executive summary (available for download below).
